Beginning

 Objective:  Introduce users to Research Port and database searching
 How to:
  1. User writes a phrase describing information needs.
  2. User accesses Research Port and selects the Quick Search tab.
  3. User enters search(es) and reviews brief results list.
  4. User checks off three relevant items from brief results list.
  5. User rewrites a phrase describing information needs and/or makes a list of 10 or fewer search terms for his or her topic.
Instructor input:
Ask users to do a quick search for articles that they could use as part of a writing assignment later in the term.  Either assign topics or allow users to choose their own topics.
Time:
10 to 30 minutes.
Outcome(s):
  1.  A 1/2 to 1 page paper users can turn in.

All Learners

 Objective: Learn basic and advanced methods to identify, find, and use information. TILT is a general tutorial for information literacy.
 How to:
  1. Go to TILT site (www.lib.umd.edu/UES/TILT/).
  2. Logon to TILT with library id or as a guest.
  3. Complete one or more TILT Modules.  Module 1 is for beginners, Module 2 is for intermediate learners, Module 3 focusses on evaluating and using information.
  4. Print out or e-mail test results. 
Instructor input:
 An early assignment to help users develop information seeking skills.
 Time:  20 minutes or more for each module.
 Outcome(s):  An assessment of users' strengths and weaknesses in the are of information literacy.
