Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Prevention Center (ATOD) was established in May 1998 by the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to increase student awareness of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by providing education and provide prevention services and materials to students.

BETTER: Building Excellence in Training, Teaching, Education and Research was established on September 1, 2004, through a grant provided by the National Science Foundation(NSF). This program assists the University in providing an academic infrastructure that produces quality science, technology, engineering, & mathematics(STEM) graduates. . .

Bowie Satellite Operation Control Center  is a joint venture between Bowie State University and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), supported by Honeywell Technology Solutions, Inc. (HTSI). This unique program features a training facility and mission control center for NASA spacecraft, located on the Bowie State University campus.

Male Minority Health Program is a consortium between Morehouse College, Wilberforce University, Morgan State University, and Lincoln University. MMHP at Bowie State delivers a comprehensive campus and community-based model program that addresses issues of health for male minorities, a

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT:

Xseed

Bowie State University has built a world class high performance computing cluster in cooperation with Apple Computer, Inc.  Xseed
is a 224-node cluster based on Apple's Xserve G5.  Using Apple's Mac OS X Server interface, each server is equipped with dual 2GHz G5 processors and is interconnected with
a Myrinet 4 Gbit/sec switch.

The combination of this cutting edge technology places Xseed among the world's top 100 most powerful supercomputers. The supercomputing cluster will enable high-end graphics, animation, and complex computational problems among other capabilities.  President Dr. Calvin W. Lowe said, "Xseed is an extraordinary resource that will provide a computing environment to enhance teaching, learning, and research at the University."

Xseed was built by Bowie State computer technology and computer science students under the direction of Prof. Mark Matties and Apple Computer engineers.  "This was a very labor intensive project and there was no way we could have done it without our students" says Matties. The supercomputing cluster is housed in the Center for Learning and Technology.  For more information on the supercomputing cluster, contact Prof. Mark Matties at mmattiere@bowiestate.edu
