Taking Courses at Another Institution

Inter-Institutional Registration: A BSU student participating in the University System of Maryland, Inter-Institutional Registration Program may receive permission from the department chair to have course work taken at the participating institution as resident credit.

Students participating in this program must be enrolled full-time in a degree program at Bowie State University for the semester in which these courses are taken.  An Inter-Institutional Enrollment Form may be obtained from the Office of the University Registrar.

After obtaining the approval of the department chair, the form should be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar for final approval prior to the student's enrollment at another institution. Inter-Institutional Registration is only available for the Spring and Fall semester.

  • Any student taking courses away from BSU must provide the University Registrar’s Office with an official transcript of their course work.  Unless we have both an approved permission form on file and an official transcript, credit for outside courses will not be posted to your academic record.

Permission to Enroll at Another Institution:  Students who wish to take courses at other institution at anytime while attending BSU must complete the Permission to Enroll in Another Institution Form.  The form must be signed by the department chair and dean of the school in which the students expects to earn a degree and submitted to the Office of the University Registrar prior to the student's enrollment at another institution.

Credits earned at institutions other than the University of Maryland system campuses do not carry quality points and have no effect on the student's grade point average.  The cumulative grade point average is based solely on credits attempted at BSU.

Students may not take courses at other institutions if they are within the last thirty (30) semester hours required for a degree.  However, up to six (6) hours will be allowed if approved in advance by the chair of the department and the school dean.

A student with sixty-four (64) or more total semester hours (including any transfer credits) may not take courses at any community college for the purpose of transferring the credits earned there toward a degree from BSU.  Course work in which a grade of "F" has been earned at Bowie State University may not be repeated at other institutions for the purpose of replacing the BSU grade.

  • Any student taking courses away from BSU must provide the University Registrar’s Office with an official transcript of their course work.  Unless we have both an approved permission form on file and an official transcript, credit for outside courses will not be posted to your academic record.
