11th Annual student Leadership Institute

May 28 – June 4, 2007

Information on becoming a Mentor

One of the purposes of the Student Leadership Institute is to provide students with an opportunity to challenge themselves to become more effective leaders for the students they represent, their campuses and society at large.  This is done through a variety of ways such as lectures and discussions, motivational keynotes, group projects and discussions, and community service opportunities.  Though all of these and more are effective way to accomplish this purpose, self-discovery through peer interactions remains one of the most beneficial ways to compliment formal learning.  To assist us in facilitating this, a Mentor will be assigned to each group to work with students throughout this intensive leadership experience.

The Mentor will be implemented to help students effectively navigate this experience.  We understand that for many student leaders, this will be new and they may find themselves overwhelmed at times.  Because each Mentor is a graduate of the Student Leadership Institute, they can help participants better manage their time, as well as give them the opportunity to learn, grow, challenge and support each other in a smaller community.  In addition, students will be able to use their mentor as a wonderful resource in making sure that they get the most out of the Institute and their group membership.

Though each Mentor may find him/herself managing multiple roles at any given time, the primary duties and responsibilities will include, but will certainly not be limited to:

1.      Assisting group members in getting acquainted with one another.

2.      Ensuring that each member is an active part of the group.

3.      Assisting group members in reading and summarizing the readings that are assigned.

4.      Making sure that the group for which they are assigned are attending all sessions and on time.

5.      Managing group progress and communicating any questions or concerns to Institute staff.

6.      Helping group members reflect on information discussed and shared throughout the day and preparing them for the next day.

7.      Helping facilitate, direct and/or guide group discussions in positive directions with desired outcomes.

8.      Helping establish group trust and minimize any potential conflict between members.

9.      Meeting one-on-one with mentees to get a better understanding of what their expectations are for this experience as well as points that may be of interest.

10.  Working with groups in the development of their final project from identifying the problem and developing an approach to acquiring necessary resources and managing time effectively.

These items are listed to give you an idea of what each Mentor will be required to do.  However, as stated earlier, you may find yourself acting as a teacher, counselor, confidant, friend, spiritual advisor, motivator, cheerleader, challenger, and taskmaster.  Because each of you value your own experience at the Institute, we know that whatever role you are in, you will be authentic in your concern for this year’s class.  Welcome and we look forward to working with each of you.
