Programs and Services
Campus Recruitment - an extensive recruitment program is available to students who are seeking entry into the workforce. Employers generally visit the campus October - November and February - March. Recruiters may also visit the campus at other times and participate in Bowie State University’s Career Fairs. Campus recruitment has been enhanced through the implementation of electronic Career Services tools such as eRecruiting. Internships - This program is geared towards students interested in obtaining work experience in their field. Students work on a part-time basis and receive academic credit. Please click on the Internships link above for additional information.
Career Lab - This library houses information on careers, employment statistics, and job vacancies from around the country. Applications and information is also available for the GRE, NTE, MCAT, GMAT, and LSAT exams. There are Occupational Outlook Handbooks and numerous magazines and publications related to careers available to visitors. Videotapes and employer literature is available for a student or alumnus to research companies that recruitment on-campus. Four computers with Internet access are available in the lab for students and alumni wishing to do on-line career research via eRecruiting, or other career-related sites.
Career Counseling - Counselors assist students and alumni who are in the process of identifying careers and majors which are suitable for career goals and acquiring skills and abilities needed to make informed decisions related to career planning. Career-related inventories are used when needed. The web-based DISCOVER career/academic assessment software package enhances the user's ablity to identify possible careers or academic majors for themselves. Employment Opportunities - The staff assists students and alumni who are seeking part-time, full-time, and summer employment opportunities. Employers telephone, e-mail, and fax job announcements to the office on a daily basis. The implementation of eRecruiting now facilitates the posting of position vacancies electronically to the website.
Graduate/Professional School Counseling - A special effort is made to encourage students and alumni to pursue advanced degrees. Tours of various Graduate/professional schools are provided. A Graduate/professional School Fair is held on-campus each year. Summer academic research opportunities are also available.
Workshops/Seminars - The staff conducts workshops and seminars to assist students and alumni who are seeking part-time, full-time and summer employment opportunities. The Immigration/Career Counselor provides immigration orientations, workshops, and update sessions for international students. Cooperative Education - at Bowie State University is based on the principle that well-educated individuals can develop most effectively through an educational pattern that, at regular intervals, plunges them into the reality of the world beyond the boundaries of the campus. The program has an inter-related experience and study involved in it. The staff attempts to find assignments that are related to the student’s career objectives, thus providing experience that enhances knowledge acquired in the classroom. International Student Services - The goal of the office is to assist individual international students and families by advising them concerning United States federal immigration, tax, and labor regulations, and by providing counseling on personal, academic, cultural adjustment, and cross-cultural communication.
