Dear Prospective Student:
Congratulations on your decision to attend Bowie State University! In deciding to attend Bowie State University, you have embarked on a journey that is just the beginning of a lifetime of learning and growing.
As the point of entry for all new students, the Student Success and Retention Center (SSRC) offers a variety of academic support programs and services (e.g. mentoring, tutoring, special accommodations for students with disabilities, etc.) to help you make a smooth transition to the University community and to help you develop the skills and competencies you need to excel during your matriculation at Bowie State and beyond.
To achieve these goals, you must become actively involved in your education. If you are a first-year student, you are required to take a placement test. If you are a transfer student but did not transfer English composition with a “C” or better, then you must take the English Placement Exam. Also, if your transfer evaluation does not indicate credits for MATH 116 or some higher math course, then you must take the Math Placement Test.
In preparation for the Placement Test, please read the information on the placement-testing link which is located on Bowie’s web page—http://www.bowiestate.edu. Do not hesitate to take the practice tests accessible through that link as many times as you like.
An African proverb states that “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Again, when you decided to become a Bowie State student, you embarked upon a journey of educational, spiritual, and personal growth. Congratulations on the initial steps that you have taken on this journey!
Welcome to Bowie State University! I look forward to meeting, dialoguing, and working with you during your matriculation at Bowie State.
Sincerely,
Doris Gillard, Director
