MESSAGE FROM THE BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY PARKING OFFICE

PARKING INFORMATION

Who Must Obtain a Parking Permit?

All Students, Faculty, and Staff employees must obtain a parking permit.  In addition, all part-time or contractual employees, vendors, contractors, telecommuters, visitors, and guests must obtain a parking permit.

Freshmen resident students do not have the privilege of having a vehicle on campus.  If a freshman feels there are extraordinary circumstances that necessitate having a vehicle on campus, these needs must be expressed to the BSUDPS Parking Office for approval or denial.  The Parking Office Administrator will notify the student of the decision.

Special Medical Arrangements:

An employee may request special permission to park in spaces reserved for drivers with a disability.  The employee must obtain verification from his/her personal physician the reason for need of special parking.  The Department of Public Safety will make a determination whether or not the employee meets the criteria for special consideration.  If granted, a monthly verification will be necessary for continued special parking.

To utilize handicapped spaces on campus, a driver must meet the State requirements.

Valid Parking Permit:

A permit is valid only when it corresponds to the license plate number registered with the BSUDPS Parking Office; is visible and displayed properly, and is not suspended, altered, or revoked.  A parking permit is transferable only to vehicles listed on the registration card.  If the permit is affixed to an unregistered vehicle, the operator of that vehicle will be subject to a $100 fine and revocation of parking privileges. All permits must hang from the rearview mirror with the expiration date being visible from the outside of the vehicle.

STEPS TO PURCHASE YOUR PERMIT

To obtain a parking permit for the current year, payment options are as follows:

Option 1:  Fees may be paid at the Office of Student Accounts

Option 2:  Payment may be made over the phone by calling  1-866-364-5826, Interactive Voice Response (IVR) with confirmation number given.  Please have your student I.D. or faculty/staff I.D. number available to process the transaction.

Option 3:  Students, faculty or staff can make Bowie Card payments at the BSUDPS Parking Office if funds have been placed on their Bowie Card.

The valid receipt or confirmation number is taken to the BSU Department of Public Safety (BSUDPS) Parking Office located in McKeldin Gymnasium or in Robinson Hall, Communications Office, #103; an Application for a Parking Permit is filled out; and the permit is issued.

Every vehicle operated on campus must be registered by plate number. (Drivers who change plates within the year must present the registration card and new license plate number to the BSU Department of Public Safety.) Registration Fees for an academic year may be obtained from the Office of Student Accounts, or the BSU Department of Public Safety.

A refund will be issued; only, if a scheduled class has been canceled and that is the only class in which the student is enrolled.

Visitor Permits:

All department heads must ensure visitors to their departments are aware of the BSU parking rules and regulations and that they either obtain Temporary Parking Permits for their visitors or advise accordingly.

A visitor may obtain a Temporary Parking Permit from the BSSDPS Parking Office. Faculty, staff and students may not obtain a Visitor’s Parking Permit unless they have purchased their permit/hangtag and do not have the hangtag on their vehicle or have forgotten to transfer the permit/hangtag to the vehicle parked on campus.

This is just a brief summary of parking information.  Please either obtain a copy of the Parking Rules and Regulations or review them on the Student Affairs and Campus Life webpage under the Campus Safety link or you may call 301-860-4040 or 4050 for further information.
